Observation Pit: Christmas Cards

Welcome to the Observation Pit in which Betty shares her salient observations, asks meaningful questions, and, yeah, lets her Freak Flag fly.

Ah, it's good to be back in the pit, isn't it?

Last time we discussed food and I found out that a shocking number of you have the same lunches every day.

You are indeed a magical group of people.

This time in the pit Betty discusses Christmas/holiday cards.  'Tis the season and all....

Do you send Christmas/holiday cards?

If you send cards, do you send more than you get?

My theory is that 95 percent of people send more than they receive.  Let's see what you have to say.

Thanks for joining me here in the Observation Pit.  Have a great day!

My wife handles the cards. I do know she keeps a list, and those who don't send us one don't receive one the following year.

Sorry Betty, I don't send Christmas cards anymore. Too many moves....but I still receive a few. And I love them. Mardy

Nope, don't send them but then I don't celebrate Christmas. I do however receive a few every year.

a few...but i am not very intentional about it honestly...i know my mom keeps a list and checks it twice...i am more a 'whatever moves me in the moment' kinda guy...or if i see someone who really needs it.

I send out cards to everyone who sends one to me. The only others are those whom I feel need a card at this time of year, or someone I really want to send greetings to. I include a one page letter with a photo or two on it. Every year I think about whether I should send letters out or not. Maybe one of these years I will stop and just post something on FB and send emails.

Hi Betty - I send out cards and brief letter letting elderly relatives and friends know what's what .. with me and my brothers et al - no children for us .. but I like to catch up.

Also I do like the personal aspect of a card .. FB, email etc are rather impersonal I feel ..

I probably get about the same as I send .. but I'm very traditional .. cheers Hilary

I have done an annual Christmas newsletter for years. This year I'm dropping from a 4 page letter with recipes, poems, etc. to 2 page (1 page front and back). I have always sent more than I receive but I'm gradually pruning my list.

If 95% send more than they receive, what happens to the overage?

I used to send out over 100 each Christmas, and then I had children, and then the postage went up, and then I stopped sending cards.

We are attending a new church that is quite small. They have a quaint tradition. Instead of mailing Christmas cards, there are alphabetized boxes in the front pews. Drop a card in for families, sorted by last name. I was delightedly surprised to find 2 cards for our family...and then I had an 'Oh, snot!' moment. Do I have to give Christmas cards back? I'm going with, 'Nah!'

Happy Wednesday, Betty! :)

Hi Betty, yes I do send Christmas cards. You are right that I never receive nearly as many as I send. I also don't send nearly as many as I used to either. I often have some friends send to me after Christmas too. I guess some people are not organized in time to meet Christmas but they still want you to know that they didn't forget you.

Here, I will undermine your efforts to classify the replies :O) I have done everything from send them regularly and receive the same amount, to not sending any and still receiving from the same people. In between, all of us cut back to just those people we don't see in person over the holiday season. It feels like I don't really know what to do anymore - I have NO TRADITION ANYMORE!

I do still send a few Christmas cards but not as many as in past years. We usually get about the same number as we send out.

My pile of cards are still sitting on the counter waiting to be mailed. There are thirty of them; I have received 6 cards so far. Looks like I will send more than I receive this year!

I used to send out well over 100 every year. But during the hubby's unemployment I pretty much stopped cold turkey. And this year with the move, it doesn't look like it's gonna happen. But I think I've always sent more than I received.

I did send out cards. I sent one to everyone who sent one to us last year

I've had this conversation this week already, great minds think alike ;o)
The answer is yes, I sent out 45 and as of today I only received 24. Granted, some I know will never send one back (nephews and nieces) but I still want them to know that I am thinking of them this time of year.

I still send cards to those in my address book - although people are starting to die off, as we all will one day! I would say I receive about as many as I send - but I still send for a couple of years in case anyone's in hospital/long term care homes - at my age you need to bear these things in mind!!!!:) I enjoy receiving just a brief note from folks I don't see any more, and assume they feel the same:)

I keep trying to pare my list down but as my nieces and nephews age, they've started sending me cards. I'm sure I received more than I sent this year.

The Mrs. handles the cards here as well--but we definitely send more than we receive.

I usually send out cards, though I skipped last year. As for the give/get ratio, I don't count. That's not the point. I just tape 'em up on the linen closet door and enjoy the glittery colors.

We do send out cards.
We send out more than we receive.
My wife has a process. If we send out cards for two years without a return card or call, off the list they go. She's a lot more detailed than I am. If it was just me, I probably wouldn't send out any.

Wrote a post about this, too: http://dkzody.wordpress.com/2013/12/18/snail-mail-christmas-greetings/

I never have just because I've always been included in my parent's. Last year I didn't because we were so busy with just being married, unpacking, etc. This year I didn't because of the move and everything else. NEXT YEAR...I plan to. But I know that my mom definitely sends more than she gets.

Some years I send out holiday cards and other years I don't. This year our Christmas cards are going to be "We've Moved!" cards in January. Assuming I get it together and send them, that is... :)
