The Observation Pit: Breakfast

Welcome to the Observation Pit in which Betty shares her salient observations, asks meaningful questions, and, yeah, lets her Freak Flag fly.

How many of you eat basically the same thing for breakfast most every morning?

Please hold up your hands.  Ah, yes.  That's quite a few of you.

I do!   A banana, a big glass of green tea, and bite-size shredded wheat dipped in peanut butter is what keeps Betty happy, healthy, and sassy too.

Here's my question:  Wouldn't you go insane if you ate the same meal for dinner night after night?

Why does the same meal plan work for breakfast, but not for lunch or dinner?

I'll just sit right here in my pit and wait for your answers.

Hi Bossy Betty - no I don't .. I have coffee always, then hardly ever for rest of the day .. and some fruit - always have always will I hope!

Dinner .. give me some mix and match ... and I have time to savour it ..

I only eat salad for lunch ... my routine in life .. suits me! Cheers with some water .. Hilary

Hmmmmmm, I was okay with that until I read your question.

I eat the same thing each day for lunch too. Breakfast and lunch are sustenance meals for me--I learned to eat that way when I was on Weight Watchers. If I knew exactly what the numbers were on my breakfast and lunch, then I could spend my calories (points) on a better dinner AND I wouldn't have to track 3 meals a day--only 1.

I don't care much for lunch and breakfast, so I don't care what I eat. And for the most part, now that it is just the two of us, we sorta eat the same meals over and over again for dinner too.

Hmm - I think it is because I'm not ready for anything adventurous in my tummy at 530am! Definitely ready for a change of pace by 6pm so bring on the variety at dinner time.

I eat yogurt and banana for breakfast and I eat basically the same thing every day for lunch. I know the calories so that I can keep track in my head. Then dinner is less complicated. I would go insane if I had to figure out what to eat 3 times a day. Although I do change it up sometimes and I go out. My waistline always regrets it when I do.

Good question BB. I think it's because we expect less of breakfast after a night of sleep, we're just hungry and want some fuel to shovel into the furnace. Unlike the case with dinner, we haven't been awake for hours with a chance to discuss and plan the upcoming meal with others. This is just a guess, I don't have the luxury of an official observation pit!

Hmmm... don't eat breakfast so I can't really discuss that too intelligently. However, the same thing for lunch or evening meal every day? No problem. As long as it is that perfect food, the be all and end all of culinary delight, pizza.

Happy Saturday BB
My morning ritual is a big bowl of Original Cheerios...with just a handful of Multi-grain Cheerios topped with a banana. I love the crunch of the Cheerios. If we eat out for breakfast...sometime during the day I have to have some crunch.
What a great observation yes indeed I would get very bored with the same thing every night!!!

Mornings are just easier when there's a routine: COFFEE, cereal w/dried fruit & nuts, puzzles in the newspaper. Then everything starts to function. And dinner is easy--whatever falls out of the refrigerator first ;-)

I eat a lot of the same foods on a regular basis, but only because I like them. BUT, I wouldn't want to not have a choice to eat that nice, juicy steak occasionally.

Nope, I don't eat the same thing for breakfast every day. Nice try...next question, please.

I eat the same thing every morning because that's what's easiest on the stomach first thing. But then I eat the same things every snack#1 of the day because I eat that at work and it's easy to pack, it is balanced, and I know the calories. The rest of the day goes to he** in a handbasket, I'm afraid. Great observation!

I eat the same thing for breakfast and for lunch. Easier that way - then I don't have to think about it.
Dinner is a variety, although we'll eat the same thing several times a month.
Maybe we're just lazy?

I RARELY eat the same thing for any meal. Variety is what keeps me happy. Cannot get in a food rut.

Hilary said...

Well I don't always eat breakfast and when I do, it's rarely the same thing. You must only be partly insane then. ;)

Very astute observation, Betty. Yes, I pretty much eat the same breakfast every day and my "variety meal" is usually lunch where I eat what I want which means I usually skip dinner. But if I do eat in the evening then it's usually popcorn.

Because breakfast in LeahWorld means bacon.
Also, one doesn't have to think when preparing the same thing every morning. Not thinking is good.

I have the same thing for lunch every day. And I wouldn't mind just having the same thing for dinner either. Though I would probably change it weekly. I'm just weird like that. LOL

I can get stuck eating the same thing for breakfast very easily. I was especially stuck in that rut when I worked. I now mix it up (no pun intended) by making smoothies nearly everyday with my Vitamix. I stock up on the frozen fruits and fresh veggies that I need to make a healthy smoothie. Most days, they are pretty darn good. Here is one for you: 1 c. almond milk, 4 strawberries (I use big frozen one from Costco), a frozen banana (I freeze them when they turn brown.), and a handful of almonds. This is so good! I haven't tried making it in a blender, but if you have a good blender that will handle the almonds, then it should work.

That's a really good question. My breakfast is usually coffee and a yogurt. I think the reason it stays the same day after day is because my brain is still in idle until the caffeine kicks it into drive. Once the brain is awake it likes the idea of variety at meal time.

I do. Have the same thing for breakfast every morning. M thru Sat, cooked oatmeal with fresh fruit, cinnamon, honey, chia seeds, and soy milk. Sundays, eggs. Our lunches don't vary too much. Dinners though are variable. Maybe because our other two meals are not. Some people in the world eat the same few things for every meal.

Huh. You know, I never would have thought of that. My breakfast, on a good day, is usually oatmeal. I choose from 4 different flavors, so maybe that helps. But on off days I eat cereal, and again, have different flavors to choose from. But curious indeed.

EVERY day at work I eat the same thing: salad with ham and strawberry poppy seed dressing, and middle eastern bread. It just makes thing easier.....

I change breakfast up very little - usually some form of an egg. If I have more time, steel cut oatmeal. Perhaps we keep breakfast rote as an easy way to being our days. One less decision as we prepare for the day.

Need to go make my eggs now.

I like non-breakfast for breakfast. Leftovers, stinky cheese on toast. It took me a long time to find that out, but it makes me happy now. I think that I would love a dinner routine, at least, for awhile. I'm tired of inventing food for the family to eat every night.
