Betty's Bigger Mess AND Getaway Plans

Hi everyone!

Ah, yes, naive Betty believed that home renovation would be fast and easy.

Sigh.

Now I totally understand those of you who commented with such empathy.

My nest has been turned upside-down.

What was going to be a simple little job has taken on a life of its own.

Here's a look at Evan's room.  Welcome home for the summer, College Boy, now help Mummy pick out colors for the walls and carpet for the floors and try not to breathe in the white dust that's floating all around the house.

Here is my little room in the back of the house where I enjoyed the comfort of an old twin mattress as workmen destroyed the rest of the house.  The two cats dominated the bed at night, leaving me just the edge.

Here's the hall bathroom before demolition.  Evan was really trying for some normalcy here, using it until the end.

It's amazing what four men can do in less than twenty minutes.

Yow!

There goes the hall bath.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the house, I was luxuriating in the comfort of this bath.  I came in as they were tearing out the wall.  In a high-pitched, nervous voice I reminded them I would be living in the house until Wednesday and I needed that wall.  They left me the wall at the end of the shower so I could still bathe.  I put up the shower curtain for a little privacy for the workmen who needed to use the toilet.

My people, this has been a nerve-wracking event.  There have been times when I really thought I just couldn't handle all the decisions and all the responsibility.  Needless to say, there have been many doubts, fears, and tears. There have been some major crying jags curled up in the corner of the garage. I just have to believe it will all be OK.

So, what's a girl to do when undertaking this major project?  Hummmm.  Well, a Certain Very Nice Man and I are leaving for a trip to London and Scotland today!  We've had this trip planned for some time. (I really thought the house would be finished by the time we left.  I told you I was naive!)  My contractors have assured me they will continue to work on the house while I am gone.

It's amazing how things can change in a year.  In many ways this home renovation has resembled the ways in which I have had to rebuild my life.

So, today I get to board a plane with a very special person and explore another part of the world!  Am I lucky or what?  I hope to check in from there. Thanks to all of you out there for all your support.  I love my blogging buddies!

My ex-husband was a general contractor, so I'm fully aware of the horrors of renovation. Think of it as having a baby. It's a terrible and depressing and hormonal several months, but in the end you get a very nice gift.
Meanwhile, have a wonderful trip with your CVNM. How lovely of him to whisk you away from the dust and mayhem!

Oh my gosh, have so much fun Betty!! Just try to ignore what's going on at home while you're gone so you can enjoy every second of it. :) I'm excited to see pictures and hear all about it!!

Oh my, what!?? Why do I suddenly feel so abandoned? Or is that simple jealousy rearing its fleshy head?

Ah well, I can't deny you certainly deserve some positive excitement, as opposed to that of having your bathtub suddenly revealed to the world. I think you should take down the toilet curtain before you leave; it might encourage the workers to step it up.

Bon voyage!

Breezy and BestSonInLawEVER honeymooned in London and Scotland and are both ready to move to Scotland. I want to go with them! :) I hope you have a marvelous time! I also hope there is someone who will be checking up on the workers while you're gone! Who knows? Maybe it will all be done when you return! Hey, keep a positive thought, right? Safe trip my wonderful friend! And relax and have a total blast!

It's a mess, but as my neighbour reminded me when we had builders in, you can't make an omlette without breaking eggs.
Glad you're getting away from it though, and it will be great to see the progress when you return.
Have a brilliant trip! I hope the weather improves, cos it's not good at the mo., so if you've any room in your suitcase, please pack some sun!!

I'm just now finishing my home remodel project (complete with contractors and all the accompanying angst). The entire project only took a year. I just got back from London. So, "Betty," we live on parallel (that's a "math term") tracks!

Yikes! What a mess! We went through an addition years ago and I cried too...twice. It's very stressful to live like that.

Have a wonderful time on your trip. I hope that guy is a good one. I want to make sure our Betty is not gonna ever get hurt again!

I have to laugh when I see those pictures of destruction. It looks like they're tearing it all down and starting from scratch.

Living through construction from a wonderful faraway place is the best way to do it. Hope you are having a fantastic time. And, I hope your contractors are working their butts off.

Hi Betty .. that is just so wonderful to read .. and I think the analogy of your life (as it happens) and the house seems to be about right - but look what's happening - you're in my land! and your life and house are coming together just great ..

Have so much fun - cheers Hilary
