One Day
One day, you will awake from your covering
and that heart of yours will be totally mended,
and there will be no more burning within.
The owl, calling in the setting of the sun
and the deer path, all erased.
And there will be no more need for love
or lovers or fears of losing lovers
and there will be no more burning timbers
with which to light a new fire,
and there will be no more husbands or people
related to husbands, and there will be no more
tears or reason to shed your tears.
You will be as mended as the bridge
the working crew has just reopened.
The thick air will be vanquished with the tide
and the river that was corrupted by lies
will be cleansed and totally free.
And the rooster will call in the setting sun
and the sun will beckon homeward,
hiding behind your one tree that was not felled.

wow. I like that--especially that one tree that was not felled. I know who that is.
BB what a timely poem!! The last line is powerful...I'd change 'tree' to BB.

True, touching and hopeful.
Thanks BB.

We should write our own love song to newly divorced. My divorce won't be final for a couple months. I think words will spill out on that final day. A phone message still can throw me into a sea of mixed emotions. How are you doing?
Oh wow. Poem of hope. It's beautiful and emotional.
Amen!
Lovely picture, Betty, and the poem is one of hope and promise of good things ahead. Hugs to you!
I Like It! Thanks!
Beautiful. Necessary.
I hope you hit that one day very soon.
And one day you will awaken and you will be whole.
Sure sounds like the author has gone through her own heartache ...
You will be that "one tree that was not felled!" It will happen.
A poem of promise. Hugs. xx
what a great poem, I like it
It's a poem with a promise, Betty.
It really is.

I can see the new bridge and the fresh water stream. Hope you walk across soon.
What a terrific poem...the promise of what lies ahead...
It's all good......
Enjoy each day!
What beautiful hope conveyed in this piece. Life does go on and you will mend.
Great poem! Have a nice week.
This almost sounds like a reflection for the song,"I Can Only Imagine" by Mercy Me.
I like that that you say {as|like} my friend thanks
Believe it, because it is true!
Hi, Betty,
I came upon your blog accidentally, and now I'm overwhelmed by how much you have touched me. Thank you for being a voice and support to those who read your words. I am Patricia Jabbeh Wesley, the author of the poem you featured, and I must say that I am so blessed to see how such a simple poem has touched so many lives. It was inspired by a couple friends' divorces, written in anger of their pain and the pain of many other women I did not yet know for my fourth book. I was blessed to have US Poet Laureate select it, and it is now blessing others. Thank you for your strength and for finding me so I could find you. Be strong for all of us women.
