Poetry Tuesday: "What We Want" by Linda Pastan

What We Want

What we want
is never simple.
We move among the things
we thought we wanted:
a face, a room, an open book
and these things bear our names—
now they want us.
But what we want appears
in dreams, wearing disguises.
We fall past,
holding out our arms
and in the morning
our arms ache.
We don't remember the dream,
but the dream remembers us.
It is there all day
as an animal is there
under the table,
as the stars are there
even in full sun.

Human nature is quirky for sure...seems we are always in search for something better when it is staring us in the face.
Happy Tuesday,

"the dream remembers us."

Not sure why this struck me so, but it did. Happy Tuesday!

But what we want appears in dreams

Oh yes.

I love this, but I'm left feeling a bit... creepy? As if my sad, unsatisfied dreams are following me around all day, just a hair out of my focus, but there.

I need to stop wasting my energy on things that just fill the void, and start doing more for happy dreams!

Lovely words! It's always there within our reach.

So it is all there for us, but we don't know how to interpret it.

It seems we want things the most only until we have them, fickle creatures that we are!

I don't dare dream anymore, just another lost cause.

I too love "the dreams remember us". Why I wonder? Is it that I have recurring dreams? Makes you wonder.

We don't remember the dream but the dream remembers us. I'm kind of like that with a lot of people too :)

That's an interesting poem.

I like this poem, Betty. It's funny some of the things we want, after we get them, we wonder why we ever wanted them in the first place.

Sometimes we need to dream to realize what it is we are looking for.

Great poem and photo. :)

I really like this. I was thinking earlier today that either gender says the other doesn't know what they want. And it's true for all the reasons Pastan so wonderfully articulates.
Be well.
