Maddie Update (Final)

We had to say goodbye to our Maddie today. She was part of our family for ten years. Saying farewell to her was so hard.

Just before Maddie died, I bent down and whispered a name to her. I told her to find that person when she got to where she was going.

"You tell him that you were my girl here on earth. Tell him I sent you to him. And tell him I said to take good care of you."

I whispered the name in her ear again until I was sure she had absorbed it.

"He was my daddy." I said. "He loved dogs, and I know he will love you just as much as I did."

I looked into her deep brown eyes and whispered, "Tell him I miss him too."

Goodbye, Maddie. We loved you.

BB...What a sad and yet wonderful post. I'm sorry for your loss and I the exact same thing with my dogs. I told them to tell their Daddy (my husband)that I miss him and am doing just fine. Love the way you think.

So sorry Betty. Losing a pet is like losing a member of the family. I still get sad thinking of my Boston that passed away 3 years ago. My wife takes his ashes from the mantle whenever it storms and holds the box until the thunder passes...Juno was always scared of thunder. Gotta love the dogs!

Oh, I'm so sorry. Your parting words to her were beautiful and I wouldn't be surprised if you don't receive some sort of confirmation from them. I just recently got a golden retriever pup. He is such a big part of my life already. A friend said, "You know, of course, he will break your heart someday." I know but it's a price I gladly pay for the time until then, as I'm sure you feel about your Maddie, too. Best thoughts to you and Godspeed to your dear Maddie.

I'm so sorry to hear about having to put your dear, and sweet looking, Maddie down. It is so hard to say good-bye to our dear companions.

I love how you told Maddie to find your father. I'm sure she did. We had to put down my dear golden retriever just three days after my daughter's death. At the time I thought I couldn't bear another loss. And yet, as I sat there with Buster, I also stroked his head and told him to go and be with Julie. It brought me great healing to think of them being together.

So sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is to have to make that decision. They give us such unconditional love and leave us better for having known them but they take a big chunk of our hearts with them when they have to go. Love that you told him to find your daddy.

Betty, I'm very sorry for the passing of your sweet Maddie. About 7 years ago, our French Poodle Muffin had to be put to sleep. As I held her outside the vet's office, she looked up at me and I said "Muffy, you've been a great dog but it's time we let you go (she had advanced diabetes and her eye had burst that morning). She looked up at me with her good eye and licked my cheek, as if she understood exactly what I had just said. I hope she was there to greet Maddie.

BB, what a beautiful and heart wrenching way to say goodbye (for now) to your precious Maddie. Although, is there any other way to say goodbye that isn't heart wrenching? I am so sorry it was her time to go. I bet she and your daddy will be wonderful friends.

I'm so terribly, terribly, terribly sorry for your loss. Truly, Betty!

Sending up a prayer for you today.

I guess it's better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all. I guess that must be so. But it's so hard to know when our hearts are being ripped from our chests and stomped on.

My Madi and I are so very very sorry to read about your beloved Maddie. We are sure Maddie and your Dad are having a nice chat along about now. It is so very hard to lose a beloved furry member of your family. There are so many good memories of her with your boys as they grew and we hope they will soon replace the saddness.
I'm so sorry to be late with our comments...blogger was very naughty yesterday.

So sorry to read this. Well, I'm not a pet person, but still, I don't care what the catechism says, I think there are dogs in heaven.

To paraphrase Will Cuppy a bit, if the boy Jesus didn't have a dog, then history has no meaning and may as well stop.

Ohhhh, Betty ♥ I'm crying here at work as I read this. I'm so, so sorry for your loss. Even though a dog and a family have a long, happy life together, it still hurts when that time is over. Sending you hugs...

(Save this recommendation for a time in the future, but have you read The Art of Racing in the Rain? Written from the dog's voice, it's so touching and beautiful.)
