Poetry Tuesday: "Happiness" by Raymond Carver

So early it's still almost dark out.
I'm near the window with coffee,
and the usual early morning stuff
that passes for thought.

When I see the boy and his friend
walking up the road
to deliver the newspaper.

They wear caps and sweaters,
and one boy has a bag over his shoulder.
They are so happy
they aren't saying anything, these boys.

I think if they could, they would take
each other's arm.
It's early in the morning,
and they are doing this thing together.

They come on, slowly.
The sky is taking on light,
though the moon still hangs pale over the water.

Such beauty that for a minute
death and ambition, even love,
doesn't enter into this.

Happiness. It comes on
unexpectedly. And goes beyond, really,
any early morning talk about it.

Morning BB what a lovely poem.
Mom said she was thinking about the pretty morning we were having as she walked to her office. The sky was pinkish and the sun just peeping over the tops of the trees.

People love others not for who they are but for how they make them feel.
And you just made me feel happy.

Beautiful poem, Betty. Thanks for sharing it.

I love Raymond Carver's writings. I once heard him do a reading on the campus where I was going to school at the time. He didn't read all that well, but I got him to sign his first collection of stories for me. A rather shy but nice man. I love this poem. I'm printing it out. Thanks!

Raymond Carver. *Sigh*

And what a succinct portrayal of happiness. It is in those little ordinary moments when I find my true happiness. Thank you, Betty, for sharing this incredible poem.

What a wonderful poem. When it first started out, just the words "So early it's still almost dark out. I'm near the window with coffee" made me think, "Yeah, that makes me happy."
