Poetry Tuesday: "Monopoly" by Connie Wanek

Monopoly

by Connie Wanek

We used to play, long before we bought real houses.
A roll of the dice could send a girl to jail.
The money was pink, blue, gold as well as green,
and we could own a whole railroad
or speculate in hotels where others dreaded staying:
the cost was extortionary.

At last one person would own everything,
every teaspoon in the dining car, every spike
driven into the planks by immigrants,
every crooked mayor.
But then, with only the clothes on our backs,
we ran outside, laughing.

Oh, Monopoly. Husband and I learned the hard way that it is not a good date night game. And my older brother was ruthless when we played as kids. He would refuse to roll the dice until I agreed to whatever awful proposal he had made. But playing with the neighbor kids? Those are some of my best childhood summer memories.

Get ready, you may be playing Monopoly in real life.

I used to play the game with my family. Games are great that way. Since the Television and computers, people don't play many games anymore.

Love it. It's been a long time since I've played monopoly. I remember having a board set up and we would play for a while and then go back and pick up where we left off

Does anyone play Monopoly any more? Or, should I say, does it come in Wii. We still have a cabinet full of games and it's time to go exploring (this said by a person who just "lost" to a three year old in Memory Match).

I remember the game nights our family had when I was a kid (a really long time ago before PC's and Wii). Monopoly was one of my favorites.

I love this, Betty. It brings back sweet memories of family monopoly games. (I don't remember ever winning, cuz I never got the Boardwalk monopoly, but I still had fun.)
Thank you for this post.
Cheers,
Robyn

AHHHHHHH....sweet, sweet memories of simpler times. I admire your 'stick-to-it-ness' I don't think I ever "finished" a game of Monopoly.

I enjoyed this so much BB - thank you for a beautiful start to my morning!

->side note, did you know that "Joan" from Doing it with Grace - and I went to school together (K to 12) and are just getting to know each other through our blogs :)

and

I love your site, love your wit, love your writing, love your color scheme, love your love of flowers, love the flower yo chose for your header...BUT....you title doesn't POP and I know that you can't move it with just the blogger template. But I can tweak that by taking the photo and adding the text, sending it back to you, and then you upload it "instead of a title"... i don't mean to be Bossy, Betty, but if you'd like me to do that, I'd be glad to do so :)
