Poetry Tuesday: "Another Reason Why I Don't Keep a Gun in the House" by Billy Collins

Another Reason I Why I Don't Keep a Gun in the House.

--Billy Collins

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
He is barking the same high, rhythmic bark
that he barks every time they leave the house.
They must switch him on on their way out.

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
I close all the windows in the house
and put on a Beethoven symphony full blast
but I can still hear him muffled under the music,
barking, barking, barking,

and now I can see him sitting in the orchestra,
his head raised confidently as if Beethoven
had included a part for barking dog.

When the record finally ends he is still barking,
sitting there in the oboe section barking,
his eyes fixed on the conductor who is
entreating him with his baton

while the other musicians listen in respectful
silence to the famous barking dog solo,
that endless coda that first established
Beethoven as an innovative genius.

This must have been written before the advent of noise-cancelling headphones.

I wonder if it was a pit bull (I know, hardly worth the effort for that one).

I think he may be talking about my dog...although I can't say for sure that he barks when I'm not home as I have never heard him do so.

Hi there,
I just stumbled across your blog. I like your pics and writing. If it's ok with you, I think I"ll tag along.
As fate would have it I recently posted a "barking" post on my blog, while in the midst of a several entry long, dog rant...

I really didn't want this to sound like an ad for my blog...sorry!

Oooh, I had a neighbor dog like this once. He liked to bark all night, too. He was a big dog. In the day I could walk into the back yard and hear him snoring. Sometimes I woke him up on purpose. :-)

I've always been afraid that my dog does the barking thing when I leave the house, but I haven't gotten any complaints so perhaps he just sulks in silence.

I have never been bothered by barking, and I rather enjoy it in the summer when all the dogs are enjoying the warm weather.
I am a freak...lol
Now cats meowing at 3 am, and babies screaming in Wal-Mart is another thing entirely...lol

ps...strpl?
